But even if it’s not what you want to spend your time thinking about on a daily basis, we know there are offices and shops across London who want to do their small part to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill sites. We know that you don’t want to spend your whole life worrying about recycling, so here are a few tips to get your responsible business waste management strategy off the ground.

Technology is great – anything that works to make your life more efficient is pretty good in our books. But apart from the endless hours of entertainment, there are some features of technology that can help revolutionise your office space. Nowadays there are so many ways of sharing information and resources digitally that you barely need to print off anything.

It can initially be tricky to move away from paper and physical handouts. We can relate. But if learning a new approach is the price to pay for doing your bit to create a sustainable future, then it’s definitely worth considering.

It’s all well and good dishing out arbitrary advice like ‘use less paper,’ and ‘recycle more’ but unless you know how much waste you are producing, where that comes from, and how much of it is being recycled, it can be difficult to make any concrete progress.

The best way to improve on your current business waste management strategy to make it more responsible is to identify key areas that waste can be reduced (say, printing or recycling for example), and make specific targets for what you’re aiming to achieve and how you’re going to achieve it.

It’s not the most glamorous of titles, but it could well be a good idea. If you ensure there is someone in your team responsible for recording waste levels, setting targets and communicating this with the rest of your team, then you stand a much better chance of making significant progress than you do by simply giving out vague sustainability advice.

Even better, you can make a competition out of it. Challenge your colleagues to be the most sustainable person in their team and produce the least amount of waste. Friday drinks are on the loser.
