When you’re on the hunt for a waste removal service, there are a few important things you need to be aware of if you want to keep costs low.

Whilst size is the obvious factor in skip hire pricing, there are other things you may not have considered that will influence the end cost. Below we highlight our 5 top tips for getting lower skip hire prices.

1. Keep skip hire pricing down by pre-sorting your rubbish

The biggest piece of advice we can give to anyone looking for lower skip hire prices is to pre-sort your rubbish. It’s cheaper to dispose of waste that you’ve bunched together according to how it can be recycled or disposed of.

Whilst you can use skips to dispose of most things, some companies will restrict certain items. Skip It will take anything except liquid waste (oil, petrol or diesel), though we do charge extra for a small selection of items.

Common items that incur an extra charge are fridges, fridge freezers, mattresses, tyres and paint tins.

To avoid extra charges for these items, consider donating anything that’s still useful or contact your local council to find out how they can help you dispose of them responsibly, leaving more space in your skip for other waste.

2. Avoid extra costs by researching the best providers

Failing to conduct research beforehand could leave you with an unreliable service that costs you more in the long run.

If you don’t have the space to place a skip on your own property or private land, you will usually need a skip hire permit from the local council. Some waste removal companies, including Skip It, will handle this for you and include it within the cost, but be aware that this isn’t always the case.

You should also be sure to check whether your quote includes VAT. As skip hire is generally used by commercial customers, many companies don’t include it within their quote.

3. Consider your environmental responsibilities and avoid fines

Spend some time thinking about the licensing requirements for commercial waste disposal. Skip It’s responsible approach ensures we’ll recycle the majority of materials we collect via a local licensed recycling facility.

In fact, if you’re working towards an environmental goal, our commitment to recycling over 92 per cent of the waste we collect could have a big impact on your efforts.

We’ll get a report back to you too that proves you’ve complied with regulations and disposed of your waste in an environmentally friendly way.

4. Skip service pricing – Know your sizes

Choosing the right size for your needs is a great way of keeping skip hire pricing low. It goes without saying that a half-empty skip is a waste of money, whilst a skip that’s too small could mean you’ll end up needing two.

But visualising the size you’ll need is tricky. We often find that it’s easier to judge when you imagine how many black bin bags it would take to fill the skip.

  • 6 yard skip (4.6 cubic metres) – 40 big black bin bags
  • 8 yard skip (6 cubic metres) – 60 big black bin bags
  • 10 yard skip (8.85 cubic metres) – 80 big black bin bags
  • 12 yard skip (9.2 cubic metres) – 100 big black bin bags

If you’re still unsure about the size you’ll need, our online enquiry form allows you to upload a photo of your waste. Do that and we’ll call you back with our best quote. There’s no obligation to book with us and we’ll do everything we can to make sure you find the best service for your needs.

For large amounts of waste, roll on roll off skips (RoRos) are available in a range of sizes from 20 to 40 yards.

If you’re concerned you won’t have enough to fill a skip, Skip It’s Wait & Load service could be the perfect option. You’ll only pay for what we take, so there’s no risk of wasting money on a half-empty skip.
