Go green with Skip It

The recycling rate for waste from households (WfH) in the UK has improved, according to data from Defra, increasing from 44.6 per cent in 2015 to 45.2 per cent in 2016.

However, recent news revealed that the shocking amounts of recyclable plastic were found rotting in landfills in Malaysia. On top of this, tonnes of plastic waste were illegally shipped from the UK.

Here at Skip It, we are committed to recycling, with 95 per cent of all the waste we collect being recycled by our network of accredited recycling centres. While measures are being taken to improve the UK’s waste management, to prevent recyclable waste from rotting in landfills, you can start making a difference by recycling waste at home and booking our recycling services!

Clever ways to recycle waste at home

Start with reducing your household waste by making small changes within your home:

  • Use cloth bags instead of plastic

No matter where you’re shopping, bring your own reusable cloth bags, instead of constantly purchasing plastic bags from the store. Keep them in your kitchen or in the trunk of your car, so you won’t forget to bring them along, the next time you go shopping.

  • Buy items that have less packaging

If you buy items such as food, that come in boxes wrapped in plastic, you are most likely to produce more waste than you intend to. Buy items in minimal packaging and watch your daily mountain of rubbish turn into a tiny mound!

  • Try to use as few bottled drinks as possible!

One of the major sources of waste is plastic bottles. To avoid producing large amounts of plastic bottles in your home, filter tap water or purchase other bottled and canned drinks. If you do choose to buy plastic bottles, purchase large containers rather than several small ones.

Now, with the small amount of waste that is left in your home, reuse and recycle!

  • Donate your items

If you have old clothing, electronics or other items you don’t want, which are still in good shape, donate them to fabric recycling facilities, schools or local homeless shelters. They can make better use of them, instead of chucking them in the bin to end up in landfill.

  • Reuse containers

Durable containers can be reused. You can reuse bottles, boxes and bags that can hold recyclable and municipal waste, without having to use plastic bin bags. Reuse paper by printing on both sides or reuse glass containers to store dry goods and leftovers. Even plastic containers are fine to use for storage!

  • Dispose of your electronic and hazardous waste responsibly

There are some household items that just can’t be recycled or reused, including batteries, TVs, computers, light bulbs and other electrical items. These items have to be disposed of at a hazardous waste facility.
